The presentation will include a short history of Devil's Slide on Route 1, and the Sequential Excavation Method of tunneling (aka NATM tunneling method). The presenters will discuss the various structural design and construction challenges for the project as well as environmental and biological aspects of the site and the local agencies involved.
About the Presenters
Thomas P. Grey P.E., Senior Bridge Engineer, Caltrans: Thomas began his career with Caltrans in 1988, and has worked in the Structure Design and Structure Construction offices for Caltrans Engineering Services over the past 24 years. Thomas also worked for San Francisco Muni Construction from 1999 to 2000. Past projects with Caltrans includes the Central and Southern Viaduct demolition and retrofit projects in San Francisco. He is currently a Senior Bridge Construction Engineer for Caltrans and assigned to projects within San Francisco and San Mateo Counties. Thomas graduated in 1988 with a BS in Civil Engineering from Gonzaga University (currently with the #1 NCAA Mens Basketball Team in the Country) in 1988.
Tuan Nguyen, P.E., Senior Project Manager, URS Corporation: Tuan worked at Caltrans District 4 for over 12 years and left as a Senior Transportation Engineer. Tuan began his consulting career as Vice President of Construction Management at TRS Consultants, Inc. He then joined URS Corporation in 1998 and has been working as Seinor Project Engineer for the URS CM/PM Office in San Francisco.Tuan graduated with a BSCE from Santa Clara University in 1982 and an MSCE from San Jose State University in 1985.
